alt.support.tinnitus

On the Internet, this Usenet newsgroup is the primary discussion forum for tinnitus.  The t-faq is the official FAQ for alt.support.tinnitus. Several other peripheral newsgroups exist where people at risk for tinnitus may be found, as well as for various health disciplines relevant to the treatment of tinnitus. (Editor's Note: Be advised that this newsgroup has had obscene posting and you may be quite repulsed by them! Please! Do not respond to them!)

Those individuals without direct access to Usenet newsgroups can post email to one of the many post-only e-mail Usenet gateways. When asking questions via this method, make sure the message asks responders to transmit information to you email address. The gateways will not allow you to read replies that are posted to the Usenet.

alt.support.jaw-disorders

This newsgroup allows individuals with jaw disorders to provide support for each other. The organizer, M. Stewart, is hoping to attract doctors, pharmacists, and physiotherapists to post suggestions, with the understanding that the newsgroup is not "asking for a diagnosis" over the net. Suggestions and opinions are welcomed to allow individuals to make educated decisions about surgery options, jaw exercise information, and medication side effects.

There are many symptoms related to jaw-disorders, such as myofascial pain, severe headaches, Tinnitus, sleep disorders, depression and stress, anxiety attacks, etc.

The IRC (internet relay chat) is in the same category as the alt.support.tinnitus newsgroup. IRC's provide a way to interact in real time with other people who have and/or treat tinnitus. The IRC #tinnitus resource is maintained through a web page containing the chat schedule, IRC help, and links to IRC software. The front-end to the web page is listed in Carol's "sig." There are generic tinnitus links, including the Tinnitus FAQ, but most of the material is related to the chat group.

Antecdotal Information about IRC #tinnitus

Their basic approach is to evaluate the tinnitus sufferer medically, otologically, audiologically, and psychosocially to establish a "Tinnitus Patient Profile," which is then used as a basis for designing an individually tailored treatment program selected from a menu of available options. The menu includes masking and auditory habituation as well as several complementary approaches such as hypnosis, cognitive therapy, biofeedback, relaxation methodology, pharmacologic management, and similar techniques and procedures.
